My sculptures, and 3-D paintings, are created by laminating and carving rigid, high density foam (reinforced with wood) into bas relief images and forms. The pieces are sealed with an acrylic stucco and are often surfaced with other materials including handmade paper pulp, wax, water and oil based paints and dry pigments.

Yoga Paintings

Some of these figures are literal or traditional interpretations of yoga postures or asanas, while others are more symbolic and personal. When I am in a particular posture, my external gaze may be fixed, but my mind’s eye sees these images in the paintings. I paint each posture after the physical and visual experience of doing it. Creating the paintings is so energizing, it has now become an integral part of my own asanas practice.

Music

My house is filled with music. My children practice and listen constantly. Piano, flute, base and cello accompany me as I move from house to studio. There is no separation as the sounds become images.

Landscape & Nature (non-rectangular)

These pieces are meant to ‘float’ on the wall. They come from notes I take about nature and my everyday surroundings. Some are closely related to the original experience. but often the work is about the symbols and tangents that occur in the writing. At times I use text both for meaning and as painterly marks.
